CfP: 3rd International Conference on the History and Culture of Bukovina 03. to 05.12.25, Regional and Global Interconnections Bukovina Institute, Augsburg, 27.04.25
The Bukovina Institute in Augsburg invites early-career scholars (BA, MA, PhD, postdoc) in the humanities and social sciences to engage in a vibrant intellectual exchange on the history and culture of Bukovina. We welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplines: anthropology, art history, cultural studies, digital humanities, ethnography, environmental history, geography, history, international relations, Jewish studies, legal history, literature, philosophy, social and economic history, sociology, translation studies, and related fields.
This international conference explores Bukovina’s history and culture from multiple perspectives, re-examining what we know and offering fresh insights. This year, early career researchers are invited to a special workshop on funding opportunities, academic programs, and publishing in Bukovina studies and, more broadly, East-Central European studies.
Following the Jewish focus of the previous edition, the “3rd International Conference on the History and Culture of Bukovina” explores the regional and global interconnections of this border region. The conference aims to examine how global and regional processes intersect in both the history and contemporary realities of Bukovina.
The keynote address will be given by Cristina Florea (Cornell University) titled “Crossroads of Empire: Revolutions and Encounters at the Frontiers of Europe.”
While all Bukovina-related papers are welcome, we particularly invite submissions on the following topics:
• Global patterns of borderland colonization: the creation of Bukovina from geographic space to political territory
• Comparative histories of Bukovina and other border regions of continental empires and beyond
• Global and transregional patterns of nation-building processes in the past and present (including EU strategies for cooperation between Eastern European EU and non-EU member states, as well as policies facilitating easier access to citizenship for transborder kin minorities)
• Transnational circulation of both material and intangible goods
• Histories of transition and transformation, including shifts in sovereignty and the violence that often accompanies them
• Interconnected histories of groups, individuals, families, as well as ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.
• The entanglements between local communities, social movements, and international (non-governmental) organizations
• Military, economic, and medical histories of Bukovina with a special attention to border-crossing
