“Exile Talks – Belarusian Exile Media on Another Sham Election”

Four and a half years after the fraudulent 2020 presidential elections and the ensuing mass protests, Belarus is once again heading toward an “election”. The situation for press freedom has dramatically worsened since then: at least 45 journalists are currently imprisoned, and independent reporting within the country is virtually impossible. Critical media outlets have been systematically labeled as “extremist,” and their staff have been persecuted and jailed. The work of fostering a free and independent public sphere can only take place from exile.
In this event, we will speak with two Belarusian journalists who are now reporting from European exile. Together, we will discuss the upcoming “elections”, the current situation in Belarus, the challenges of exile journalism, and the importance of free information in an authoritarian environment.
