The Academic Network for Eastern Europe (akno e.V.) is looking for a student assistant to support the Analysis and Research Team, starting 1 May 2026. This position can be based in Berlin, as well as partly remote. The role involves 10 hours per week (Mini-Job-basis/ Werkstudierendenvertrag). The position is initially limited until 30 November 2026 , with the potential for extension depending on future funding. Please also note that akno e.V. has been listed as ‘undesirable’ in Russia since November 2023. As part of the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and the Eastern Academic Alliance EAA funded by the European Commission, we conduct bi-monthly policy analyses and annual monitoring studies on (higher) education systems and academic freedom in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, and, since 2026, also in Georgia. As a student assistant, you will support our team in preparing and presenting the analyses and will be involved in a variety of work processes.

Your tasks will include:
•Carrying out independent research assignments on (higher) education systems andacademic freedom in our focus countries.
•Analysing interview and/or survey data.
•Supporting the planning and implementation of events in and around Berlin in autumn andwinter 2026.
•Administrative tasks such as communicating with partners in Germany as well as in ourfocus countries.
Your profile:
•You have strong English and Russian language skills, both written and spoken. Good Germanlanguage skills are an advantage.
•You have in-depth regional knowledge of one or more countries we focus on and areinterested in current developments in Eastern Europe.
•You are nearing the end of your bachelor’s degree or are currently studying for a master’sor PhD in a social science or related discipline (political science, sociology, anthropology,etc.) and/or have a regional focus on Eastern Europe.
•You work independently and are motivated to support our team in understanding the stateof academia and education in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Georgia, and in raisingawareness of these issues in the policy sphere and among the general public.
•You have already gained initial experience in your academic career researching political,legal or social issues in the focus countries, or possess relevant methodological knowledge.Knowledge of quantitative data analysis is an advantage.
