SUMMARY:Reisen: Bildungsreise jüdischer Widerstand und Holocaust in Bialystok

SUMMARY:CfP: The “We” in Central and Eastern Europe. Freiburg\, 30.09.2026
DESCRIPTION:The “We” is a commitment. Attributions and appropriations of belonging play a central role in the creation of community – they serve as markers of (self-)assurance\, facilitating internal identification but also external demarcation. This community building effect has an inherent explosiveness: it is capable of emphasizing what ‘we’ have in common (Scheer 2022)\, but this demonstrative attitude also harbours populist potential. Initially broad and vague in conceptual terms\, we therefore pay particular attention to communities\, when they are called upon: war and crises\, but also the need to find orientation after migration and to plan for the future to negotiate belonging(s). As a result\, new formations of collective images and mechanisms are constantly emerging\, challenging existing concepts. \nFor instance\, with regard to Eastern Europe\, the term ‘We’ took on a charged meaning in contrast to ‘They’: Not only is the multi-ethnic region imagined as inferior (Todorova 1997)\, but its citizens also experience racialised degradations throughout history and due to their (labour) mobility\, which highlights inequalities between East and West (Lewicki 2023) and clearly calls into question a European ‘We’-consciousness.\n[…] \n“We” as a political project\nHow have political programs and movements shaped the politicization of (ethnic) communities and their identities? To what extent have they negotiated the issue of loyalty\, especially with regard to potentially conflicting\, overlapping loyalties? How are these contexts reflected today; how are they remembered\, but also discussed in the present? \nThe Mediatized “We”\nHow have media products – from historical newspaper prints and posters to today’s digital platforms – addressed public consciousness and opinion? To what extent have they contributed to connection and exchange and addressed (new) opportunities for community building? \nThe Transnational “We”\nParticularly\, but not exclusively\, in the context of flight\, expulsion and exile: Which strategies did/do people employ to settle in a new place\, in a new social environment? How did/do they in turn (re)establish connections to their region of origin? To what extent does this interaction create potential for intermediate\, hybrid positions? \nCommodifying and Renewing the “We”\nHow do collective actors – such as tourism\, associations\, town twinning\, etc. – participate in the marketing of a certain “we”? Which aspects of detraditionalisation\, but also which attempts to revive or even remake folk culture and involve new groups of stakeholders can be traced in their activities? \n[…]\nThus\, historical and archival perspectives will be considered alongside contemporary research from a cultural studies perspective and other related fields. These approaches include case studies from the context of Germans in Eastern Europe\, but the format is also open to comparative perspectives that go beyond this scope or relates it to other minorities\, as well as perspectives from broader minority and diaspora research. Please send your proposal for a 20-minute presentation\, consisting of an abstract (~2\,000 characters) with a working title and brief biographical information about yourself\, to Jana Stöxen (jana.stoexen@ikde.bwl.de) by 1st March 2026. \nTravel expenses can be covered within the scope of the funds provided. \nFor further information and the full Call for papers\, please refer to our website: https://www.ikdebw.de/news/mobilisation-and-community-formation-in-minority-and-diaspora-contexts-the-we-in-central-and-eastern-europe

SUMMARY:CfP: ceecon26\, DGO Congress of Central and East European Studies. Berlin\,15.01.2026
DESCRIPTION:On 8 and 9 October 2026\, the German Association for East European Studies (DGO)\, the Freie Universität Berlin (FU) and the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) will jointly host the third Congress of Central and East European Studies (ceecon26) in Berlin. \nceecon is the largest multidisciplinary congress on Central and Eastern Europe in the German-speaking realm. It was established in 2022 as a cooperative project of the DGO and the Freie Universität’s Institute for East European Studies (Osteuropa-Institut). \nceecon provides the international research community with an important forum for exchanging and discussing the latest research findings on the region. The congress spotlights scholarly work on the Baltic States\, Central and Eastern Europe\, the South Caucasus\, and Central Asia. \nAcademic exchange on topics relevant to all scholars in the field will take place in plenary sessions. Parallel sections will address research questions concerning a broad variety of topics and methodological approaches. ceecon also offers space for the presentation of research projects and round tables on special issues. We especially encourage young researches to participate in the congress. \nThe theme of ceecon26 is (Un)Certainties \nThere is a tangible sense of living in a time when established certainties are unravelling and new uncertainties are reshaping global realities. Russia’s war against Ukraine and its far-reaching implications for Ukraine\, Russia\, the wider region\, and the world are still impossible to fully grasp. At the same time\, the international order rooted in the post-World War II era is undergoing significant changes. Europe\, particularly its former socialist regions\, but also Central Asia and the Caucasus\, are pivotal areas for a restructuring of orders. Old alliances are put to the test\, while new alliances and institutions are forming with uncertain stability and outcomes. While we observe the emergence of new orders\, the resilience of both democracies and autocracies is contested. Political\, economic\, and military power\, norms\, identities\, and memories are being renegotiated. Violent solutions have become more appealing to various actors\, shaping perceptions\, practices\, and policies at local\, national\, and international levels. In this complex situation\, literature and culture play a special role as spaces where new cognitive frames and models are explored. \nceecon26 will bring together different disciplinary perspectives (history\, sociology\, political science\, political economy\, geography\, anthropology\, literary and cultural studies\, etc.) to reflect on historical and contemporary uncertainties and certainties and on interactions between the two. How much certainty is there within the apparent uncertainties? How do people and societies deal with growing uncertainties\, and how does this influence the stability of orders? How do changes of regional power relationships\, structures\, and institutions intersect with global developments? The inherent tension between certainty and uncertainty also raises definitional and methodological issues: What exactly constitutes (un)certainty? How can it be measured or observed? \nUnder the umbrella theme of (Un)Certainties\, we especially welcome contributions on the following themes:\n• Dynamics and effects of war and violence\n• Security perceptions and policies\n• Global (dis)order and the formation of new political\, economic\, and social orders\n• Democratisation and autocratisation\n• Resilience through adaptation\n• Historical perspectives on (un)certainties\n• Contested ecologies\, environmental catastrophes\, and environmental humanities\n• Migrations and movements\n• Academic freedom and civil/fundamental rights\n• Artificial intelligence and new orders\n• Crisis response and innovation\n• Culture\, memory\, and politics\n• Comparative perspectives\n• (Un)certain perspectives for East European Studies \nWe welcome proposals for: \n– Individual papers\n– Panels (Proposals for panels should consist of three thematically relevant papers from different institutions and\, preferably\, from different disciplines. We especially welcome submissions for panels that also include junior researchers.)\n– Presentations of research projects by PhD students (PhD students may also submit proposals for individual papers and for panels).\n– Roundtables\n– Other innovative formats \nJunior researchers whose papers are accepted will be invited to compete in the Young ceecon Award for best submission. More information will be provided upon official acceptance of a proposal for the congress. Eligibility for participation in the competition is limited to junior researchers and post docs whose dissertation was submitted no more than three years before the date of receipt of the ceecon proposal. \nSubmit proposals here: \n– Paper: https://forms.gle/rb6x44wff11AaHbt9\n– Panels: https://forms.gle/VNBf37orQpgyn8xA9\n– New Research Pe(e)rspectives (PhD projects): https://forms.gle/Dm1Q3fBDGhdvop3j8\n– Round Tables: https://forms.gle/gnd71z3WzX1pVU3CA\n– Others:https://forms.gle/eG97YBkxemBG29fR6 \n!Deadline for submissions in all categories is January 15\, 2026! \nThere are no conference fees. Participants are expected to pay for travel and accommodation themselves. (Junior) researchers who do not receive institutional support may apply for travel grants. \nPlease note:\nThe organizers of ceecon do not collaborate with Russian state institutions. Anyone supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine will not be welcome. \nOrganising committee:\nAnna Artwińska\, Katharina Bluhm\, Fabian Burkhardt\, Gabriele Freitag\, Heidi Hein-Kircher\, Robert Kindler\, Ariana Kravchuk\, Gwendolyn Sasse
